Life’s a beach!

Especially when you live in Danang. The closest beach is 5 mins away from city centre and costs a dollar to get to on xe om (taxi motorbike) which is pretty expensive selon moi. I can’t wait to get a bike with a basket so I can ride there on my own and chill out whenever I please.

So on Saturday, I finally made it to the beach and man, was it pleasant. I rented a chair and ordered some Biere La Rue and a plate of squid (tentacles and all) and proceeded to burn my mouth from all the spicy nuoc mam (fish sauce) this country has to offer. It’s not really that spicy but I don’t know my limits and so I constantly suffer from flaming lips. : (

Anyway, the waves were crashing and ppl selling food kept coming by. Me and my beer were not lonely. White rose (= banh bao) meat cakes, shrimp dumplings (a bit better than siu mai) and all kinds of drinks. You don’t even have to leave your seat and all the ppl come to you and give you whatever you’d like.

Then after a couple hours of reading, drinking, lounging, I get a note in Vietnamese from some guy, delivered by the server girl. Unfortunately I couldn’t really read it but saw that it contained his number. Oh well.

BUT he’s persistant cuz he then wrote it again in English and it said ” I see you sitting here with a sad look on your face. I’m a foreigner as well, from Australia, and am wondering if you’d like to hang out — no strings attached.” Hmmmmm, what’s a girl like me to do? Nothing was my first choice but then the guy approaches me and starts chatting. He’s actually a sailor heading out to Nha Trang that night and since I just arrived, I don’t have a number (actually I do now but how was he to know that?) and so really, there were no strings attached.

Good times are to be had on the beaches near Danang. I can’t wait to take some of you there… (I’ll drive the motorbike!)
