Curling parents (think of the image)

This expression comes to me courtesy of my Swedish friend, Katarina 🙂

Anyway, it refers to parents who clear the road/path/life for their children. Like in the sport, the parents sweep all the bumps and edges away so that the curling “bowl/puck/ball” goes down a straight line and eventually hits the “good” zone.
(Sorry curlers, my knowledge is limited but I have curled [and not just my hair] before.)

So think about this in terms of parenting. It’s not good at least because children learn from bumps and difficulties in their lives. Many parents do this, but from my experience, Asian parents can sometimes be notorious for thinking that they should pave the way for their children. Some assistance is great and much appreciated, but a curling parent sometimes loses sight of the fact that the child doesn’t need that much help.

It’s all about balance I guess, and I will try not to spoil my kids, whenever they pop onto the scene…

take care ppl 🙂
